The power of a good speech is one of the best tools of communication. Recently, I was able to attend the keynote speech during the annual Association for Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) meeting. The keynote featured Yumi Kendall and Joseph Conyers, a cellist and bassist from the Philadelphia Orchestra. The duo opened by playing an excerpt from a movement of one of the Duets for Cello and Double Bass by Rossini. Their excerpt had a conversational and dancelike tone that set the stage for the rest of the keynote.

Kendall and Conyers formatted the speech as a conversation where they played off each other to convey their message. The two introduced the concept that there is always room for growth. Kendall stated that musicians never stop learning, and even as an adult, Kendall would visit her grandfather (who introduced the Suzuki method to the US) for lessons. She has continued to learn throughout her career and the value of being a “forever student” has been ingrained within her. Conyers also conveyed this continuous growth in his work with service. After joining the Philadelphia orchestra, he realized that he was not done with his work. He began project 440 which aims to support young people and give them opportunities through music. Conyers’ dedication to using his talent to help others grow along with Kendall’s continuous learning demonstrate the growth that is possible. Both of these musicians are a prime example of how talents can be used to pass on knowledge and help others along with the power of continuous learning.
